GOOD NEWS ABOUT DEMOCRATS! May 17, 2013

“That’s a part of the Republicans’ national agenda. They use their women to do it. If you think about it, during the last session there were men proposing these things and I guess they thought they looked like of bad doing that. I guess they figured it would legitimatize [anti-woman legislation] more if they put the face of women behind these bills,” Rep. Alma Adams [D – Guilford] said.

It’s not just a moment, Moral Monday has become a movement.

Hundreds of civil rights leaders, workers, clergy, educators, health professionals and everyday people pledge to peacefully protest and happily go to jail to stop what many consider harsh, unprecedented legislation the North Carolina GOP has produced this year. Republicans are not bothered by the noise, they say, but the sound of a popular uprising is getting louder and louder.

North Carolina’s Legislative Black Caucus have been deeply involved in the fight in the legislature and Thursday morning the group joined in protest. A majority of the 33 member unit marched from the Legislative Building to the Capitol to meet with Republican Governor Pat McCrory, wanting to directly express concerns and outrage at the direction the GOP is taking the state and to join with the hundreds who have peacefully demonstrated against Republican legislation in the past several weeks resulting in nearly 50 being arrested.

From the elderly to minorities, North Carolina Republicans have attacked almost every group with their biting and restrictive legislation. This time it’s the kids – especially the poor ones.

Across the state, North Carolinians are livid, frustrated and almost out of options. Opponents of the Republican-led General Assembly are worried with the direction of the state and the GOP's disregard for hundreds of thousands of Tar Heels, shoving out legislation that robs many North Carolinians of rights and dignity.

While the Republican-led General Assembly concocts bills in Downtown Raleigh - tearing at North Carolina’s fabric - many citizens miles away from the Legislative Building are hurting because of the way the GOP has handled job creation, voting rights, women’s rights and social safety nets. They’re concerned, scared and angry at the state GOP and fearful of what’s coming next.
